The .SE country-code extension was set up in 1986 and given to Sweden. During the first years after its introduction, the registration process was quite restrictive, so a very small number of domain names were purchased. Persons were allowed to register no more than one domain under .PP.SE (“pp” stands for “private person”). Local presence was compulsory, i.e. only Swedish persons, firms and organizations were able to buy a dot SE domain. In 2003, however, the registration process was liberalized considerably and, as a result, the number of dot SE domains has been mounting each year.
